The advantage of taking your family on a city vacation in the USA is everything is close by and generally there a hundreds of attractions for families.  Most major cities have theme parks or entertainment parks and water worlds or swimming complexes that will always entertain the children, as well as children friendly museums, shows, family friendly tours and the sightseeing and activities particular to a city.  Don't forget to research local activities that may not be in the guide books - ice skating rinks, playgrounds, indoor climbing, go karting, mini golf, indoor bowling, cinema complexes and other fun stuff to use as fillers as keep the kids happy.  America's top city vacation spots will also have lots of specific attractions, possibly beaches or national parks nearby and great family friendly accommodation.
